The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) sets registration standards; Ahpra administers registration. Internationally qualified nurses should determine the applicable route. The established assessment route involves qualification self-check and potentially orientation, portfolio review, or outcomes-based assessment. Since April 2025 there are additional streamlined general-registration routes for eligible experienced registered nurses from approved comparable jurisdictions. Being licensed in the UK or Canada does not automatically guarantee eligibility.

Recommended next steps

  1. Review the NMBA internationally qualified applicant information and current standards.
  2. Check eligibility for the streamlined internationally qualified RN registration standard.
  3. If not eligible for that route, follow the relevant Ahpra self-check/assessment workflow.
  4. Satisfy English, identity and other mandatory registration standards.
  5. Confirm final registration before practising; investigate Australian visa eligibility separately.
