For most internationally qualified nurses, the Nursing Council of New Zealand requires primary document verification through TruMerit before a Council application. The Council lists current or recent overseas registration, nursing qualifications, English language evidence and 1,800 hours of post-registration nursing experience among the evidence requirements. Applicants must complete cultural-safety introductory courses, fitness-to-practise checks and, depending on assessment, competence testing. Australian-registered applicants have a separate pathway.
Recommended next steps
- Verify your qualifications and professional documents through TruMerit as directed.
- Apply to the Nursing Council after verification.
- Complete the Welcome to Aotearoa New Zealand courses and relevant checks.
- Complete competence assessment if instructed by the Council.
- Check job market and immigration eligibility separately before major expenses.
