The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) regulates nurse and midwife registration in the UK. Overseas-trained nurses begin with eligibility and qualification evaluation, then complete the NMC-specified Test of Competence where required. The Test of Competence includes CBT and OSCE components. Applicants must also satisfy English language, identity, health, character, indemnity and other registration criteria. NMC registration and a UK visa are separate processes.
Recommended next steps
- Use the official NMC pre-application checklist.
- Apply through the correct NMC overseas-trained route and submit identity and qualifications evidence.
- Follow NMC guidance on CBT, OSCE and time-sensitive supporting records.
- Complete registration checks and receive an NMC registration decision.
- Check employer sponsorship and UK immigration criteria separately.
