US nursing licensing is state-based. A state board of nursing assesses internationally educated applicants and determines the credential evaluation, English language and background-check conditions for that jurisdiction. NCLEX-RN or NCLEX-PN is the licensure examination relevant to the licence class. Passing NCLEX does not itself confer a licence or US work authorization.
Recommended next steps
- Choose a state board and intended licence class.
- Read its internationally educated applicant requirements.
- Complete any required third-party credential evaluation and document verification.
- Seek the required authorization to take NCLEX and register for the exam using official instructions.
- Satisfy remaining board conditions and confirm licence issuance.
- Review immigration sponsorship and healthcare-worker certification requirements independently.
